Exploring the Different Types of Hand Controls for Accessible Driving

Satellite Hand Controls

These controls allow users to operate essential vehicle functions—such as acceleration, braking, indicators, headlights and wipers—without removing their hands from the wheel.

Acceleration is similar to a Motor Cycle in that you have to rotate the handle.  Braking is achieved by pushing the lever towards the feet.

Electronic Accelerators

Electronic accelerators provide a seamless and responsive alternative to traditional foot pedals, offering enhanced accessibility for drivers with limited lower limb mobility.

Acceleration is obtained by pulling the lever downwards towards the lap whilst Braking is achieved by pushing the lever towards the feet.

Electronic Remote Controls

Brazier Mobility are the South Australian agents for the “RF 360”.

The controller is an advanced Hand Control unit enabling a mobility challenged driver to activate up to 6 different electronic functions from either the steering wheel or other existing disability hardware.

The unit is constructed using high quality, state of the art, micro-electronic software and as a result offer the ability to connect directly into the CAN-BUS electrical configurations of most modern computerised vehicles.

  • Hard Wired Keypad or RF Remote control

Voice Actuated And Controls

The Voice Command system brings the latest assistive technology to the automotive industry.

Voice prompts activate the auxiliary controls of the vehicle and the software is programmed to work with various languages including ‘Australian’ English. The intelligent software continues to recognise voice prompts regardless of music or voices coming from the radio.

The high quality shotgun microphone is designed to be directed to the driver with the gooseneck connection and specifically recognising the voice of the driver. This is advantageous because it can pick up the sound only from the user, directly in front, while disregarding any other unwanted sounds that may be present in the environment.

Spinner Knobs

A Steering Wheel Spinner Knob allows the driver to control the Steering Wheel via one hand holding the knob.

The knob is easily removed (and refitted into another vehicle) when not in use – returning the Steering Wheel to the normal 2 handed operation.

A Spinner Fork is suitable for drivers who do not have enough grip strength to use a standard steering wheel or spinner knob . It has a press button located on the underside which, when pressed releases the knob using one hand.

Pedal Modifications

Left Foot Accelator Pedals

Irrespective of whether your car’s accelerator is mechanical or electronic/fly by wire we are able to supply & install the appropriate componentary whilst not removing the manufacturer’s original pedal.

We install Left Foot Accelerator Pedals where an individual has either lost or has limited Right Foot use.

This allows the manufacturers right foot accelerator pedal to return to normal usage when being driven by an able bodied person.
